You can haul a lot more with a MINI Cooper than you’d think

People who don’t own a MINI but are considering getting one always have questions about the interior space and the ability to haul stuff. We own three MINIs and after driving SUVs for years I can tell you we don’t miss the SUVs one bit. When we need to get some bags of mulch or other large items we just fold the seats down and throw a blanket in the back (to protect the plastics) and we’re in business. For the few times each year when we’ve needed to haul something that’s too large to fit in one of the MINIs, I rent one of those $19.99-an-hour trucks at Lowe’s and us it to make a quick trip. What we save in gas by driving MINIs every day more than offsets the few times each year when we have to rent a truck to haul something. And in the convertible I can haul all kinds of stuff. Check out this photo of MINIBee with an 8-foot box inside. No problem!

Two of our MINIs have trailer hitches too, and we have one of those inexpensive Harbor Freight trailers. So we’ve gone as far as North Carolina with all four of us in the cabrio and our luggage in the trailer. You also can get one of those trailer hitch boxes for the back if you don’t want to pull a trailer. They hold a lot of stuff! Here’s MINIBee with our trailer attached during a trip to The Florida Keys.

So don’t worry about the MINI being too small inside because it’s not, especially if you only haul large items a few times a year. You can save money on gas plus have a ton of fun driving your little street-legal go-kart. Once you go MINI you’ll never go MAXI again!

Testing new cameras at BMW CCA Autocross

The local BMW car club had their first autocross of the year so I took the opportunity to test some new video gear. This video was made with a new GoPro HD HERO2 and an Optrix HD camera mount system for my iPhone 4S. The iPhone video was shot from the top of the windshield, so that’s the clips showing nothing but cones and track. The interior shot and driver’s side shot were both done with the GoPro. Having two focal lengths for making video cuts really helps in the editing. Let me know what you think!

A new year, a new beginning!

Here I sit, looking back on the turmultuous year that has been 2011. The year was filled with personal and professional challenges and some fantastic accomplishments too. Ultimately though, the sudden and unexpected elimination of my position at the St. Petersburg Times, after 26 years of service, took center stage in October and since then I have been focusing on the next chapter of my life.

Now, I’m pleased to tell you the outline for that chapter has been written…in February I will join the new MINI of Wesley Chapel as a Motoring Advisor, converting my love and passion for the MINI into a full-time job. I’m excited by the prospects and the opportunity to work with the leadership at the Morgan Auto Group and at Wesley Chapel, to learn the car biz and also provide an enthusiast’s perspective as we become active members in the community. We’re going to do great things there! If you’re in the area I hope you’ll come by and see us after we open. Don’t forget to ask for MINIBee.

Happy MINI New Year!

On Monday, April 12, 2010 at 8 AM, the Dragon re-opened for business. MINIBee was there to record it for history and give it some business! I completed lifetime Dragon runs 53-58, four of which had no other vehicles on the road in either direction. Bring on MOTD 8!
